Little Red Riding Hood

There was a sweet little girl who always wore a pretty red cloak and hood which her grandmother had made. The grandmother, who lived in a tiny cottage in the woods was sick, and Red Ridinghood started out to take her a basket of good things to eat.

As she walked through the woods, a big wolf stopped in the path in front of her. She talked to him and told him all about her grandmother. Then, while she stopped to pick some berries, the wolf ran ahead to the grandmother's little white cottage.

The wolf opened the door and jumped into the cottage. At first the poor old woman was very scared but she jumped out of bed and ran into a closet and locked the door.

The wolf tried and tried, but he could not open the door. So he thought he would wait until Little Red Ridinghood got there and eat her instead of the grandmother. When the little girl arrived, the wolf was in bed in the grand- mother's nightcap.

"Why, Grandmother, what big arms you have," cried the child. "The better to hug you with," said the wolf.

"And what big eyes and what a big nose, Grandmother," said Red Ridinghood.

"The better to see you and smell you, my dear," the wolf told her. "And what big teeth," said the little girl.

"The better to eat you with!" shouted the wolf. Red Ridinghood screamed so loudly that a passing woodsman heard her and ran to the cottage. He had a gun with him and shot the wolf. Then he opened the closet and carried the grandmother back to bed. Both she and Red Ridinghood were saved.
